Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for the United Kingdom?
Since April 2025, EU nationals — including French nationals — must obtain an ETA (electronic travel authorisation) before any tourist or business stay of less than 6 months. It is not a visa, but it is mandatory, including for a weekend in London and for children.
Is there a Youth Mobility scheme for French nationals?
No. Since Brexit, France is not among the countries participating in the British Youth Mobility Scheme. In 2026, only about a dozen nationalities are eligible: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Korea (18-35), Japan, Iceland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and Uruguay (18-30), as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan, who must also be selected by ballot. India comes under a separate scheme, the India Young Professionals Scheme. A youth mobility agreement between the UK and the EU is under discussion, but nothing is signed to date. We therefore cannot handle a British Youth Mobility application for a French passport.
What is the difference between the ETA and a visa?
The ETA is an online authorisation, valid 2 years, for tourist, family or business stays of less than 6 months, with no centre appointment. A visa is needed to work, study, settle, or if your nationality is not eligible for the ETA. It involves an appointment at a VFS Global centre for your biometric data.
Why is Youth Mobility so expensive?
Because the British government requires, on top of the £340 visa fee, a health surcharge of £776 per year — i.e. £1,552 for two years, payable in one go. These £1,892 go entirely to the British authorities and give you access to the NHS throughout your stay. The surcharge is refunded if the application is refused.

Official invitation required
Your nationality requires an official invitation (with a number issued by the authorities) to obtain the e-visa. This number must be entered in the application. It is not a personal invitation from a friend or relative.
